In 2006, we took a Spring Break trip to Jamaica.

This was our first international flight. We even flew over Cuba. Kendra saw us flying over land and pointed out that it must be Cuba. I didn’t believe we’d be allowed over Cuban airspace, but sure enough – the pilot announced it.

In Jamaica, we stayed in an all-inclusive resort for 5 nights. Lucky for me, all-inclusive included the bar. Kendra was very excited to drink virgin daquiris every day. The pool was nice and had a great twisty slide that we enjoyed. There was a fabulous view of the property and beach from our balcony. At the beach, we swam, collected shells and rode jet skis.

The resort restaurants were nice. There was a nice covered cafeteria-style place that was open and airy. We really enjoyed the omelet bar every morning, and Kendra fell in love with the fresh fruit. There was a Japanese restaurant where we tried sushi for the first time – including some local fresh sushi. There was an Italian restaurant that we enjoyed while eating at a balcony table. There was also a nice restaurant where we had some great duck.

We also went to some planned off-property excursions. We took a long bus ride out to the Dunn River Falls. It’s one of the few waterfalls that empty into the ocean, and it’s easy to climb as long as you’re wearing good water shoes. It can be slick. We also took a boat tour to the Luminous Lagoon. It’s a phosphorus microbe filled lagoon that is a sight to behold at night. There were also copious amounts of alcohol included in the tour. That was some feisty rum punch! Kendra had regular punch and I had to use some of hers to dilute mine so it wasn’t so much like drinking paint thinner.

Though Jamaica was pretty run-down in places, we had a nice beach vacation.
